Loris's OTELLO DIY loudspeaker (HUMBLE HOMEMADE HIFI)

I recently was able to audition a pair of OTELLO speakers, built by my friend Loris…a very compact two-way monitor loudspeaker following a classic form-follows-function design. The drivers are the Scan-Speak D2010-8511 tweeter, one of the best 19mm dome tweeters available. The 15cm mid woofer used for the Otello is also sourced from Scan-Speak and made in Denmark.

The result is simply GREAT, very neutral, well balanced and coherent, with a bass surprisingly good for such a small loudspeaker.

At the end of this little adventure I realized that the ways to get a good sound are many and, for those who are able to approach a DIY project like Loris does, really endless.

Mono in Mono: AUDIO TECHNICA AT33 MONO

AT 33 Mono "45 Anniversary" with an 25mµ tip. There is nothing left in Sound. You can hear details you never know that they exist. Exactly what I like.

Beautiful sounding cartridge with extended highs and excellent detail, rich solid bass and a very neutral mid-band.

The LP surface noise goes down significantly. The highs coalesce and sound more defined and extended. Instruments are easier to pick out in a band or orchestra. The bass acquires greater definition. There is actually a semblance of a stereo effect, too, probably because the brain picks up cues from the sound pressure and phase differences picked up by the microphone. Simply a GREAT performer ;)

DENON DL 108 DU

Again, I kept forgetting to listen critically and just enjoyed the music.

This RARE Denon gem is one of my favorite MM cartridges. A solid performance...very good delination between instruments, natural sounding and engaging presentation. 

Being a Moving Magnet Cartridge, the Stylus is user-replaceable and many vintage arms that are incompatible with MM Cartridges will be happy with this Denon.
Last but not Least, you don't need a step-up to reach a superb Performance!
